OKLAHOMA CITY – Returning to Oklahoma City, where he helped the Thunder
reach The Finals to the roaring delight of fans like no others in the NBA,
the Rockets’ bearded shooter marked the occasion with his season-high
scoring night.

Harden’s first game against the Thunder was his worst game with the Rockets.
Though he maintained before the game that he would simply play, neither using
or ignoring the emotions of the night, he seemed clearly ill at ease, which
would be more encouraging than to think the Thunder defenders had a book on
him so complete that they shut him down.

With Harden missing his first nine shots, failing to get his first bucket
until a second-half breakaway, the Rockets offense could not keep pace with
the Thunder. Oklahoma City led by as much as 18 and then blew open the game
in the fourth quarter on the way to a 120-98 rout, snapping the Rockets’
 three-game winning streak and extending their road losing streak to five
games.


It did not help that Chandler Parsons, the Rockets second-leading scorer and
rebounder this season, was out with a sore right shoulder, and his back up,
Carlos Delfino was still days away from returning from a groin injury, though
Coop started and scored 18 points. Without them to provide perimeter shooting
and ball movement, the Thunder trapped the ball out of Jeremy Lin’s hands
through the first half, allowing him only one shot.


The Rockets’ big men, Patrick Patterson and Omer Asik, picked up much of the
slack. In the second half, the Rockets’ tweaked the halfcourt offense enough
to repeatedly free Patterson for open looks. He scored a career-high 27 as
the Rockets hung around within 11 late in the third quarter.

Harden, however, did not find his shooting touch until midway through the
fourth quarter. After making just 1 of his first 13 shots, he dropped in a
pair of 3s. He was 3 of 16 overall, but made 9 of 11 free throws to score 17
points.

Harden was generally welcomed back. One half naked, masked fan held a sign
that said “Fear the Greed, not the Beard,” apparently thinking that rhymed.
But Harden was greeted with loud cheers in introductions. That changed to
boos when he had a brief exchange with former Rockets center Hasheem Thabeet,
who was initially ejected for pushing official Marc Davis before a view
review changed the ball to a technical foul.

“Hopefully I get some claps,” Harden said before the game. “Hopefully, I
see some beards in the crowd as well. They were tremendous. They were
unbelievable. I love them. They were really supportive of me and the Thunder.
”

After the game, he exchanged long hugs with Kevin Durant, who led the Thunder
with 37 points, and Serge Ibaka, who had 23.

“It was the first time seeing (former teammates and coaches) since the trade,
” Harden said. “It was just good to see them, kind of laugh and joke
around. You don’t really realize it until you’re actually in the position.
Just to be warming up on the other side felt kind of weird.”

The game did not feel much better, but as he said before it began, it was
just one game, no more important he said than any other.

“This game doesn’t count for any more wins or losses,” Harden said. “It’
s just another game. It’s the business. You have to move on.”
